After successful 2015, 2017, and 2018 events in Michigan, Writing Day Workshops is excited to announce The 2019 Michigan Writing Workshop — a full-day “How to Get Published” writing event in Livonia, MI on May 4, 2019.
This writing event is a wonderful opportunity to get intense instruction over the course of one day, pitch a literary agent or editor (optional), get your questions answered, and more. Note that there are limited seats at the event (200 total). All questions about the event regarding schedule, details and registration are answered below. WHAT IS IT?
This is a special one-day “How to Get Published” writing workshop on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Detroit Livonia Novi. In other words, it’s one day full of classes and advice designed to give you the best instruction concerning how to get your writing & books published. We’ll discuss your publishing opportunities today, how to write queries & pitches, how to market yourself and your books, what makes an agent/editor stop reading your manuscript, and more. No matter what you’re writing — fiction or nonfiction — the day’s classes will help point you in the right direction. Writers of all genres are welcome.
This event is designed to squeeze as much into one day of learning as possible. You can ask any questions you like during the classes, and get your specific concerns addressed. We will have literary agents onsite to give feedback and take pitches from writers, as well. This year’s agent & editor faculty so far includes:

BLOCK ONE: 9:30 – 10:30
1. Getting Published in Today’s World: 10 Tips to Make You the Writer Agents and Publishers Want. This workshop discusses the challenges writers face in publishing today and offers up 10 practical tips to help you break through the barriers and find success.
2. So You’ve Finished Writing Your Middle Grade or Young Adult Novel — Now What? An in-depth look at how to get your YA/MG novel published, from joining the writing community and crafting a head-turning query letter, to finding the right agent and surviving the submission process.
3. Settings to Make Your Novel Unforgettable. The setting of your novel is more than just a stage from which your characters deliver their lines—it’s an integral part of your story.
1. 15 Tips on How to Write Like the Pros. This workshop is a thorough crash course concerning craft, style and voice.
2. Crafting a Query that Sparkles. This course takes you through crafting a submission email that will sparkle with content that is needed to be seen and how to get your work noticed.
3. Amuse Yourself With Murder: How to Write a Thrilling Mystery. Writing a mystery can be a killer — unless you entertain yourself first.

LUNCH ON YOUR OWN: 11:50 – 1:15
Lunch is on your own during these 85 minutes.
BLOCK THREE: 1:15 – 2:30
1. “Writers Got Talent”—a Page 1 Critique Fest. This is a chance to get your first page read (anonymously — no bylines given) with attending agents commenting on what was liked or not liked about the submission.
2. How to Sell a Nonfiction Book: The 9 Musts of a Proposal. This session is completely devoted to nonfiction that is not memoir.
3. How to Write Picture Books that Show Inclusion. In this session, you will learn about the evolution of diversity in children’s books.
BLOCK FOUR: 2:45 – 3:45
1. Traditional Publishing 101: Your Book’s Journey from Idea to Shelves. For beginning writers who are curious about how a book actually gets made and into the hands of readers, this workshop demystifies what can seem like a convoluted process.
2. Writing Great Fantasy and Science Fiction That Sells. This workshop addresses the specialized challenges of writing fantasy and science fiction in today’s world.
3. The Best Strategies to Finish Your Novel (Finally!). This class will give you the tools you need to finally finish your novel, and have fun doing it.

BLOCK FIVE: 4:00 – 5:00
1. 18 Frequently Asked Questions About Publishing All Writers Should Know. Before you publish your work or query an agent (and after), there are plenty of things you need to know.
2. Everything Writers Need to Know About Copyrights, Contracts, Defamation and More. This workshop provides an introduction for both self-publishing and traditionally published authors to basic legal issues they may confront when writing and marketing their work.
3. Not Your Mother’s Romance Genre: How to Write Romance for Today’s Readers (& Publishers). This workshop offers an introduction to romance, will explore the evolution of the genre (including love-making positivity), the ins-and-outs of the industry today, and how to be carve a career in a wildly competitive marketplace.
SESSIONS END: 5:00
At 5 p.m., the day is done. Speakers will make themselves available by the workshop’s bookstore for a short while to sign any books for attendees.

Vicki Selvaggio [SOLD OUT OF PITCH APPOINTMENTS] is a literary agent with Storm Literary (formerly with Jennifer De Chiara Literary). She is currently looking for lyrical picture books, middle grade and young adult fiction, new adult, mysteries, suspense, thrillers, paranormal, fantasy, narrative nonfiction, and adult fiction. Vicki is especially drawn to middle grade and young adult. “I especially love thrillers and all elements of weird, creepy stuff. Kelly Peterson is a literary agent with Rees Literary. Kelly seeks manuscripts in various genres within Middle Grade, Young Adult, and Adult age ranges. In Middle Grade, she loves fantasy, sci-fi, and contemporary that touches on tough issues for young readers. Her Young Adult preferences vary from contemporary to high fantasy, sci-fi (not the space kind) to paranormal (all the ghost stories, please!), and historical all the way back to rom-coms. These one-on-one meetings are an amazing chance to pitch your book face-to-face with an agent, and get personal, individual feedback on your pitch/concept. If the agent likes your pitch, they’ll request to see part/all of your book — sending you straight past the slush pile. It also gives you an intimate chance to meet with an agent and pick their brain with any questions on your mind.
(Please note that Agent/Editor Pitching is an add-on, separate aspect of the day, for only those who sign up. Spaces are limited for these premium meetings, and pricing/detail is explained below.)

Add $29 — to secure a 10-minute one-on-one meeting with any of our literary agents or editors in attendance. Use this special meeting as a chance to pitch your work and get professional feedback on your pitch. (Spaces limited.) If they wish, attendees are free to sign up for multiple 10-minute pitch sessions at $29/session — pitching multiple individuals, or securing 20 minutes to pitch one person rather than the usual 10. Add $69 — for an in-depth, personal critique of your one-page query letter from Brian Klems, one of the day’s instructors. (This rate is a special event value for Michigan Writing Workshop attendees only.) Registrants are encouraged to take advantage of the specially-priced critique, so they can send out their query letter with confidence following the workshop. Also, if you are meeting with an agent at the event, you’re essentially speaking your query letter aloud to them. Wouldn’t it be wise to give that query letter (i.e., your pitch) one great edit before that meeting?
Add $89 — for an in-depth personal critique of the first 10 double-spaced pages of your novel. Spaces with faculty for these critiques are very limited, and participating attendees get an in-person meeting at the workshop. Options:
- Fantasy, science fiction, mystery, thriller, romance, YA, and LGBTQ fiction: Faculty member Steven Piziks, a published writer, will get your work in advance, critique the first 10 double-spaced pages of your story, meet with you for at least 10 minutes at the workshop to discuss his thoughts, and pass along written critique notes at the meeting.
- Mystery, crime, suspense, and thriller: Faculty member Elizabeth Kane Buzzelli, a published writer, will get your work in advance, critique the first 10 double-spaced pages of your story, meet with you for at least 10 minutes at the workshop to discuss her thoughts, and pass along written critique notes at the meeting.
- Mainstream fiction, literary fiction and women’s fiction: Faculty member Erin Bartels, a published writer and freelance editor, will get your work in advance, critique the first 10 double-spaced pages of your story, meet with you for at least 10 minutes at the workshop to discuss her thoughts, and pass along written critique notes at the meeting.
- Children’s picture books: Faculty member Lisa Rose, a published picture book writer, will get your work in advance, critique your picture book (1,000 words maximum), meet with you for at least 10 minutes at the workshop to discuss her thoughts, and pass along written critique notes at the meeting.
- Romance and erotica: Faculty member Aliza Mann, a published writer, will get your work in advance, edit the first 10 double-spaced pages of your story, meet with you for at least 10 minutes at the workshop to discuss her thoughts, and pass along written critique notes at the meeting.

Because of limited space at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Detroit Livonia Novi, the workshop can only allow 200 registrants, unless spacing issues change. For this reason, we encourage you to book sooner rather than later.

Refunds: If you sign up for the event and have to cancel for any reason at any time, you will receive 50% of your total payment back [sent by check or PayPal]. The other 50% is nonrefundable and will not be returned, and helps the workshop ensure that only those truly interested in the limited spacing sign up for the event. (Please note that query editing payments and manuscript editing payments are completely non-refundable if the instructor has already edited your work.)
